"IN MEMORIAM.

The death yesterday afternoon of Mrs. Adeline West, takes from San Bernardino another of the early pioneers, and one who has not only lived here until she has endeared herself to a very large circle of intimate friends, but has raised and seen grow up around her, a family of sons and daughters that any mother might be proud of. She has indeed, been a "Mother in Israel," and whether in the home circle or among friends and acquaintances, she has drawn to her the love and affection of all who knew her.

She leaves to mourn their loss, a fond husband, who for over half a century has trod the path of life with her, and eight children, all of whom are living in this city, and two sisters, who survive her. She herself was one of ten sisters and four brothers, and their mother lived to witness the marriage of her fourteen children.

The deceased was born in 1824, in Marion county, Alabama, the daughter of Jeptha Weeks, a farmer and mechanic, and was married in Mississippi, December 30, 1847, to James Monroe West, who survives her after 52 years of married life.

They left their home in Mississippi on February 21, 1856, to try their fortunes in the west, and reached San Bernardino on November 8, 1856. On arrival here, Mr. West bought the land where they have lived since their arrival, 43 years ago, and here they raised their family of nine children, all but one of whom are residing here at the present time.

Their names Samuel M. West, Simon Jeptha West, Sarah Jane West, now Mrs. W. H. Mee, James Monroe West [Jr.], Nancy Abigail West, now Mrs. Charles A. More, Mary Elizabeth West, now Mrs. Frank Yager, Thomas Jefferson West, and George Washington West. She leaves two sisters here, Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Ridley, and a number of grandchildren.

The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family homestead on East Third street."
