"NEEDLES MARSHAL DIES AFTER FIVE DAY STRUGGLE FOR LIFE
TWO ACCUSED FACE MURDER CHARGE HERE
Death Penalty to Be Sought by State for Killers of Jim West
FUNERAL IS TOMORROW
Masonic Fraternity Will Be in Charge of Last Rites for Needles Chief
Jim West, city marshal of Needles, died at 11:10 a.m. yesterday [July 6].
Unconscious most of the time since last Thursday morning when Jack Slater, a confessed burglar, fired a bullet into his brain, Officer West slowly sank although he clung to life by days because of his remarkable vitality. Brain specialists and surgeons had stood by, fearing to use the knife lest it would bring certain death.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Mark B. Shaw parlors with the Masons in charge. Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery beside the body of the officer's late wife [nee Mary Prine].
[skipped description of crime and charges]
Specialists Could Not Operate
Marshal West was wounded when he attempted to arrest [Jack] Slater and [James] Brown at a service station in Needles where the two men were dickering to sell the loot from a service station robbery in Williams, Ariz. The two prisoners admit the robbery.
[skipped description of crime]
Citizens of Needles chartered a Santa Fe special train to rush Officer West to the Ramona Hospital, he arriving late last Thursday.
James Monroe West [Jr.] was 67 years old and a native of San Bernardino. He had resided in Needles for 18 years, going to the desert after serving as a police officer in San Bernardino to accept the office of city marshal. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Aubrey Cook, of Needles; two brothers, T[homas] J[efferson] West of Fresno, and George W[ashington] West, San Bernardino, and two sisters, Mrs. C[harles] A[lbert] More [nee Nancy Abigail West] and Mrs. William H[unt] Mee [nee Sarah Jane West], both of San Bernardino."
