Amanda “Mandy” Steffen Evans was the daughter of German immigrants. Her father Hans Asmus Steffen was born in the village of Passade, located in what is now the Plön District of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, while her mother Lena Rohweder was born in the Schoenfeld Parish of Schleswig-Holstein. Hans immigrated to America with his brother Jochen Steffen in 1864, while Lena arrived in 1862 with her parental family.
