Hans Asmus Steffen was born near the city of Keil, in Holstein, Germany, on March 23, 1841. He received his education in his native country and home, and left there at the age of 23 years to sek his fortune in the United States. In 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Rowether and the couple settled on a farm near Traer, Iowa. Later they moved to Reinbeck, Iowa, and made their home in that vicinity for six years after which they came to Remsen. This was in 1885, and for these 42 years the family have been residents of this community. Mr. and Mrs. Steffen lived on a farm south of town until 1914, when they retired and came to town. Mrs. Steffen passed away in 1920. For several years thereafter Mr. Steffen continued to keep up the family home, but later, on account of his infirmities, he made his home at various places with his children.
