After growing up on his parent's farm and working as a farm laborer for a time, by age 25 Amiel had become a barber and was cutting hair and trimming beards in the village of Remsen, Iowa. In 1916 he married Nellie VanOrsdell Bell, and within a few years the couple moved to sunny California. They settled in Long Beach where Amiel continued his trade and Nellie became active in the Women's Christian Temperance Union. They did not have children.

Nellie, who grew up in Woodbury County, Iowa, was the daughter of Jonathan Bell and Emma VanOrsdel Bell, while Amiel was the son of German immigrants Hans Asmus Steffen and Lena Rohweder Steffen.
