Second of two daughters born to Milton Dulin, a Confederate soldier killed in the war, and his wife Sophia Weddington, Nancy's older sister was Mary Matilda "Mollie" Dulin (1860-1948, Mrs. David A. King). While Mary married David King (1854-1925), Nancy married David's nephew, Emsley Valentine Stearns (1859-1920). See listings for David and Mary King in Lancaster Co., SC.

The 1910 census suggests that Nancy and Emsley had ten children, but I only have the names of six of them:

Lexia A. Starnes (18 Oct. 1881-14 May 1953) with the family in SC in 1900, not there in 1910. She married Thomas J. Jones (1873-1938) around 1902, and lived in Columbus, Georgia. She married J. C. Culpepper (1869-1950) around 1940.

Murray Lee Starnes (11 Aug. 1883-22 April 1938) m. Crowley Nix. Employed in the textile industry. He was killed by an automobile, while walking along the road in Richmond Co., buried at Elmwood.

Roscoe Columbus Starnes (9 May 1889-8 March 1966) May 1889 in 1900, name given as Ross. WW I registration states he was born 9 May 1888, death cert. says 1890. He was divorced at death. He was a retired machinist. He died of cancer at Huntersville Hospital, Mecklenburg Co., and buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

Hannah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Starnes (5 Aug. 1891-15 Dec. 1977) Tombstone says born 1889, but 1891 from the 1900 census. married Ben Z. Turner (1888-1952) in 1920. One child, Lexie Merle Turner.

Ida Lessie Starnes (16 July 1893-23 Feb. 1989) May 1893 in the 1900 census) married Sidney Irvin or Irwin Quinn (15 May 1893-8 Feb. 1935, son of Richard Quinn and Luck Hawkins...it's luck in the index, I think it's Lula.) He was in NY in 1917, but back in Charlotte by 1920. He died at Huntersville, NC, of tuberculosis, and was buried at Elmwood. At least two children, Nancy Otillia Quinn and Melvin Joseph Quinn (1921-2008, m. Janette Cogdell).

Samuel Valentine Starnes (19 July 1899-21 Feb. 1954) m. Lillie Costner. He was a painter. He died in a conflagration when an oil stove exploded. Death cert. says born in 1900. Name given as John in 1900 census. Buried at Forest Lawn cemetery. Lillie (13 March 1904-11 Nov. 1970, dau. of John D. and Nannie M. Costner, born in SC). Informant on her death cert. was Mrs. Paul E. Dease, Charlotte, bur. Forest Lawn.

Nancy died in the great influenza epidemic of 1918/19, and Emsley also died of pneumonia following influenza two years later. Their death certificates only state that they were buried at Mint Hill, NC, but do not specify a cemetery. (Update: 16 Feb. '15, Just found an obit. for Emsley. Appearently they were buried at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, Mint Hill, NC.)
