Murray Lee Starnes was a son of Emsley Valentine Starnes/Stearns (1859-1920) and Nancy Jane Dulin (1862-1918). His paternal grandparents were Dulin Stearns (c.1836-1863) and Rusha Elizabeth King (1837-1894, later Mrs. A. Jackson Edwards), and his maternal grandparents were Milton Dulin and Sophia Weddington. Both his grandfathes were Confederate soldiers who died in the War.

Emsley was the brother of my great grandfather, Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962, see D. B. Stearns' memorial here at Elmwood for further information on the family.) Uncle Emsley was living in York Co., SC in 1900, and the family was in Charlotte by 1910 and 1920, though Murray wasn't listed with them in the census.

On 29 May 1910, Murray married Caulie Ann Elizabeth Nix (1892-1969). She was a daughter of John Thomas and Mary Pressley Nix, of Columbus, Georgia. They were living in Spartanburg, SC in 1911, but evidently they divorced sometime before 1915, when she remarried. As far as I know, he never remarried.

Murray was employed in the textile industry, and lived in Charlotte. He was struck and killed by an automobile about 1 mile south of Rockingham, NC. I do not know if he had children.
