Ethel was the 9th of 12 children of John & Alice Bateson. Her siblings were Nellie, William, Perry, Harry, Lloyd, Gladys, Mabel, James, an unnamed girl, Effa and Lorel. She appeared in the 1920 Portage Township, Ohio census with her parents and five siblings at age 8.

Ethel married Perry Henry Wollam on October 3, 1919, in Wood County, Ohio (marriage license 878) when she was 18; Perry was 20. They had two daughters, Maxine Wollam born in Canada in 1930, and Marveline Wollam born in Ohio in 1933. In the 1930 & 1940 census their family was living in Cygnet, Wood County, Ohio. The 1940 census shows their home was on Front Street in Cygnet.
