Served the Confederate Army in Co. D, 16th Regiment, Alabama Infantry from 1861 - 1865 as a Private. He enlisted in Montgomery, Alabama, August 9, 1861, at the age of 18. He was wounded, during what family believes to be the Battle of Gettysburg , losing part of one finger on his right hand. He was "honorable surrendered" April 18, 1865 at Greensboro, NC.

Married Nancy Elizabeth "Bettie" Stephenson, October 23, 1872 in McKinney, Collin Co., TX.
