Rev. John Bliss, Princeville, Dies at Age 99

The Rev. John Franklin Bliss, 99-year-old former mayor of Princeville, retired minister and pharmacist, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Peoria County Nursing Home.

He had been a patient there since last July after suffering a fractured hip in a fall.

Born at Princeville Nov. 25, 1858, he was a son of Solomon and Elizabeth Blanchard Bliss. His father came here as a boy with his parents in 1836 from New York state.

A RESIDENT of Peoria area all of his long life, Mr. Bliss recalled living in a log cabin during his early childhood. He was self-educated, studying the Bible at home with his seven brothers and sisters.

As a young man he began his work as a Methodist minister, serving 60 years in pastorates throughout this area. He organized Grace Methodist (now University Avenue) Church here and another at Averyville, then a north side suburb of Peoria. Other charges were at Yates City, Atkinson, Manito and Mineral, and for 10 years he served the Congregational Church at Stark.

Mr. Bliss was a registered pharmacist, operating his own drugstore at Princeville for many years, until his retirement in 1942. He served twice as mayor of the town. He also played on an early Princeville baseball team.

HIS FIRST marriage was to Dora Bohrer, who died in 1912. He married Eunice Palmer in 1913, and her death occurred in 1937. In 1938 he married Gaurah Sniff Gray.

Surviving are four children of his second marriage: Palmer Bliss of Peoria, John Marvin and Earl S. Bliss and Mrs. Leo (Eloise) Graves of Princeville; 14 grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Four children of his first marriage preceded him in death: Fred and Robin Bliss of Peoria, Bertha Bliss who died several years ago in California, and Lewis Bliss, who died in 1957 at Pontiac, IL.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Princeville Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Mader, pastor. Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery. Visitation is to be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Bouton Mortuary in Princeville.
