Wesley Steen was one of the last children born to Hilaire Elias Steen (c1780-1859) and Catherine STELLY (1793-1856). Wesley was a twin with his brother Sidney.

Both boys were born on 31 January 1832 near Breaux Bridge, Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana; Wesley died on November 15, 1906 in Saint Martinville, Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana. Although Wesley indicated that he was born "near Breaux Bridge", chances are that the two boys were born on their parents' plantation on the Bayou Vermilion (in Saint Martin Parish) and not in Breaux Bridge. Arnaudville would have been closer than Breaux Bridge so we're not sure why Wesley indicated he was born near Breaux Bridge.

His birth information was found in the Southwest Louisiana Records as:

"STEEN, Westly (Elias & Catherine STELLY) b. 31 Jan. 1832 (GC Ch.: v. 1, p. 101)."

[*See UPDATE below for new info on Wesley's death date]

Despite diligent searching, neither my sister nor I were able to determine Wesley's date or place of death. However, on Sept 19, 2014 my sister found Wesley's death date of Nov 15, 1906 in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. His death info was found in the St. Martinville newspaper.

Prior to finding his actual death date/place, we had last found him on a 1900 census so we knew that he was still alive as of 8 June 1900 and living in the 4th Ward of Saint Martin Parish with his son; he was 68 years old at that time. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a succession record for Wesley which seems odd given how meticulous the State of Louisiana was, and is, regarding successions.

On 5 June 1856 Wesley married Isabelle Smith in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish. Isabelle was born about 1840 in North Carolina and died sometime after the 1870 census was taken but before the 1880 census was enumerated as Wesley indicated in 1880 that he was widowed. Wesley and their son, Albert, were living in the same household in 1880.

Based on his Civil War pension application, Wesley and Isabelle had four children, but based on census records and the application, only two sons lived to adulthood:

Albert (born 1858) and Joseph Hampton (born 1860 or '61)

Wesley enlisted in the Civil War fighting with the Confederate Army. He enlisted in the same Company as his twin brother Sidney serving under Colonel Bush in Company B, 7th Louisiana Calvary. We have not been able to locate Wesley's Civil War records (i.e. company muster cards), but we did find his pension paperwork although it contained only four pages.

Wesley's son Albert had moved to Harris County, Texas and died in Houston, Texas on July 23, 1929 and was buried in Houston.

Wesley's son Joseph appears to have stayed in Louisiana where he married and divorced but had no children. Joseph died in St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish, Louisiana on 18 Sept 1941.

**Wesley's son, Albert's findagrave memorial is #68500946. Albert had a son named Sidney Guam Steen for whom I created a findagrave memorial #77043204 but I found out after I created the memorial that someone else had also created a memorial for Sidney before I had (I was going by his death certificate which listed him buried in the cemetery I placed his memorial). The other memorial has Sidney buried in a different cemetery (#62655419) as he was apparently re-interred after his wife's death and buried in the same cemetery as she was. I'm not sure if I am going to have to delete my memorial so am including both #'s here.
