Elias Steen was the second born son of Hilaire Elias Steen (c1780-1859) and Catherine STELLY (1793-1856). He was born on 28 December 1821 in Grand Coteau, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana; baptized on 18 April 1822 in the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau, and died on 28 September 1827 in Grand Coteau. Elias was buried on 29 September 1827 in the cemetery of the St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau.

Elias' birth and baptism information was found on FamilySearch.org, 'Louisiana Births & Christenings, 1811-1830; 1854-1934' and in the Southwest Louisiana Records book as follows:

"STEEN, Elias (Elias STEENE & Catherine STELLY) b. 28 Dec. 1821, bt. 18 April 1822 by Rev. M. JEANJEAN. Spons: Louis STELLY & Magdelaine STELLY. Fr. Hercule BRASSAC (GC Ch.: v.1, p. 24)".

Death and burial information for Elias was found on the website www.FamilySearch.org in the record, 'Louisiana Births and Christenings, 1811-1830; 1854-1934' and in the Southwest Louisiana Records book:

"STEEN, Elias (Elias) died 28 Sept. 1827 at age 6 years; buried 29 Sept. 1827 in the parish cemetery. Fr. Jean ROSTI (GC Ch.: v.1, p.17, #128)".

His siblings were:

Lucille 'Lucy' (1810-1844), Augustin (1812-aft 1880), Marie Arsene 'Mary' (1814-1858), Emelie (1816-1817), Elaisa 'Eliza' (1817-1859), Catherine Minerva (1824-1923), Jean Baptiste 'John' (1827-1862), Felice 'Philise' (1830-bef 1856), Sidney (1832-1913) and Wesley Steen (1832-aft 1900)

*Sidney and Wesley were twins

**Sept 16 2016 - I CONFIRMED with the Saint Charles Borromeo Church that Elias is, indeed, buried in the cemetery as is his mother Catherine Stelly-Steen and his grandmother Marie Magdaleine Ritter-Stely. Unfortunately, there is not a record of little Elias' father and Catherine's husband, Hilaire Elias Steen, as having been buried in the cemetery. So we'll still be searching for him.

HEADSTONE (Sept 11, 2016):
I had submitted a request for a picture of Elias' headstone and a nice findagrave member went to the Saint Charles Borromeo Cemetery and searched the entire cemetery and could not find it. Many thanks to Angie Hertzberg Martin for her efforts in trying to find Elias' headstone. She also indicated, "So sorry I couldn't find him! There are very few graves of that age there and almost none that are still legible. There is a section of the Cem that is all children. I shot the whole section but very few can be read. Wish I could have helped you!"

**On Sept 16 2016, I spoke with someone at the Saint Charles Borromeo Church who told me that there wasn't a record of a headstone for little Elias but that he was definitely buried in the Saint Charles Borromeo Cemetery (he looked at the actual record). He said Elias may have had a metal cross that eroded over time and is now gone.

BURIAL (Updated Sept 13, 2016):
I had listed burial for Elias in the Saint Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Grand Coteau, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana based on the death record which indicated he was buried in the "parish cemetery".

Agnie thought that the "parish cemetery" referred to might be the Saint Landry Church Cemetery. She did find that Elias' funeral was held at the St. Landry Church. She said she had found Elias in the Grand Coteau funeral book in the "S's" but indicated that all that really means is that they had his funeral there. Angie went on to say that if Elias was buried there he would have been one of the first ones there and indicated that even the original Jesuit priests weren't buried there until the later 1800's. She said it's possible that he's buried there but most likely not.
