Augustin Steen was born 1 Nov 1814 in Grand Coteau, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana, baptized on 25 Jan 1815 in the Catholic Church in Opelousas, and died 27 Oct 1881 in New Iberia, Iberia Parish, Louisiana (this death info my sister just found in Sept 2014). He was the 3rd child of Hilaire Elias Steen (c1780-1859) and Catherine Stelly (1793-1856).

Augustin's birth is recorded in the Southwest Louisiana Records book as follows:

BIRTH: STEEN, Arsene (Hilary - of Kenteuka [Kentucky] & Catherine SCHETELI [STELLY] - from here) b. 1 Nov. 1814 & STEEN, Arsene (Hilaire of Kentucky & Catherine SCHETELLY) b. 1 Nov 1814 (Opel. Ch.: v. 2, p. 45)

BAPTISM: STEEN, Arsene (Hilary - of Kenteuka [Kentucky] & Catherine SCHETELI [STELLY] - from here) b. 1 Nov. 1814, bt. 25 Jan. 1815 (Opel. Ch. : v. 2, p. 45)

Note that originally I thought the reference to "Arsene" was Augustin's sister, Marie, but after googling the name "Arsene" I found that it is a BOY'S name, male in gender so it cannot be his sister, Marie.

Augustin's siblings were:

Lucille 'Lucy' (1810-1844), Marie 'Mary' (c1812-1858), Emelie (1816-1817), Elaisa 'Eliza' (1817-1859), Elias (1821-1827), Catherine Minerva (1824-1923), Jean Baptiste 'John' (1827-1862), Felice 'Philise' (1830-bef 1856), Sidney (1832-1913) and Wesley (1832-1906)

He is listed on the following censuses w/ his parents and siblings:

1820 - St. Martin Parish, Louisiana
1830 - St. Martin Parish, Louisiana

On 30 March 1839, Augustin married Mary Ann Hetherwick (c1820-aft 1880), in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana. Mary Ann was born in England.

They had five children: Elias (1840-bef 1850), Augustin Robert (1841-bef 1850), William Otho (1855-1937), Catherine M. 'Katie' (1858-1937), and Fannie J. (1863- )

Augustin and his wife and young son were living with Augustin's parents on the 1840 census and were living in Saint Martin Parish. The 1850 census has Augustin and family living in Grand Pointe, Saint Martin Parish, Louisiana and in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish in 1860 and in the same place for 1870. The 1880 census has Augustin living in the 6th Ward of Iberia Parish. This was the last record we found for Augustin and Mary until my sister found his death info in September 2014.

Augustin died on 27 Oct 1881 in New Iberia but according to his obituary, Mary was still living. However, we have not been able to find her death date or location - we just know it was after October 1881 but we believe it was before 1900 as we have not been able to find any records on Mary after the 1880 census and the Oct 1881 obit. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who may know when and where she died. [Note Sept 2014: My sister found his death info in an obituary that indicated his death as October 27, 1881 in New Iberia]

Augustin was a planter which means that he owned a plantation and he did own slaves. His family, including his father, brothers, and in-law's, all planted sugar cane.
