Emelie Steen was the fourth child of Hilaire Elias Steen (c1780-1859) and Catherine STELLY (1793-1856) and was born on 15 September 1816 in Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana. Emelie was baptized on 21 May 1817 in the Saint Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, Saint Landry Parish, and died on 4 July 1817 in Opelousas at the age of ten and one-half months old.

Emelie was buried in the St. Landry Catholic Church Cemetery in Opelousas on the same day she died – July 4th – as indicated below.

Emelie's birth and baptism information was found in the Southwest Louisiana Records as follows: "STEEN, Emelie (Elias - from Kentucky & Catherine SCHETELI - from here) b. 15 Sept. 1816, bt. 21 May 1817. Pats: John STEEN & Jenny NEEL - from Pennsylvania; Mats: Jean Baptiste SCHETELI - from St. Jean Baptiste & Magdelaine RETHER - from Frederictown in Maryland; Spons: Joseph SAVOY, represented by Simon DURIO & Magdelaine SCHETELI, wife of Joseph SAVOY. Fr. Michel Bernard BARRIERE (Opel. Ch.: v.2, p.102)."

Her burial information was also taken from the Southwest Louisiana Records book: "STEEN, Emelie (Elias - a native of Kentucky & Catherine SHETELY [STELLY] - of this parish and inhabitants of the Grand Coteau area) bur. 4 July 1817 at age 10 mths. in the parish cemetery. Fr. Michel Bernard BARRIERE (Opel. Ch.: v.1, p.160)."
