PROTECTION - Mary Lois Lauffer, 73, of Protection, died Dec. 17, 1998, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born March 31, 1925, at Protection, the daughter of Elmer and Erma Troyer Zimmerman. She attended Murray Grade School and graduated from Protection High School In 1943. A lifetime Comanche County resident, she was a former employee of Protection Schools and Protection Valley Manor and was a retired custom harvester and homemaker. She belonged to First Baptist Church, was a volunteer guardian with the Kansas Advocacy of Protective Services for Protection Valley Manor and did volunteer work with reading and bingo at the manor, all at Protection. On April 6, 1947, she married Charles Lauffer at Protection. He survives. Other survivors include: three sons, Kevin, Protection, Kermit, Salina, and Charles Jr., Tyler, Texas; two daughters, Connie Hidy, Montpelier, Ind., and Karen Bertone, Joplin, Mo.; three brothers, Earl Wayne Zimmerman, Huntington Beach, Calif., Alfred Zimmerman, Protection, and Myron Zimmerman, Palm Desert, Calif.; four sisters, Elsie Gunden, Myerstown, Pa., Norma Conrad, Rock Falls, Ill., Ruby Stotts, Goshen, Ind., and JoAnn Day, Amarillo, Texas; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Zimmerman.
Funeral will be at 2 D.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Protection, with the Rev. Rod Young presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Hatfleld-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater. Burial will be in Protection Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
