Charles Edward Lauffer, 91, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013, at the Minneola District Hospital in Minneola, KS. Born December 7, 1921, at Piedmont, KS, he was the son of Ray and Sarah (Norman) Lauffer. Charles was a long time resident of the Protection, KS area, moving there in 1956. He graduated from Piedmont High School in 1940 and was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-1946. He worked as a custom harvester for most of his career and was a member of the U.S. Custom Harvesters Organization. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Protection, KS. On April 6, 1947, he married Mary Lois Zimmerman at Protection, KS. She preceded him in death on December 17, 1998. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Gerald Lauffer and George Lauffer; and one sister: Lucille Calhoun. He is survived by two daughters: Connie Hidy and husband Richard of Montpelier, IN and Karen Bryant and husband Rick of Seneca, MO; three sons: Kevin Lauffer and wife Kim of Protection, KS, Kermit Lauffer and wife Tami of Salina, KS, and Charles Lauffer, Jr. and wife Amy of Tyler, TX; one brother: Dale Lauffer of Oklahoma City, OK; eleven grandchildren: Charles, Janel (Green), and Jonathan Hidy, Laci (Ulrich), Jordan, and Andrew Lauffer, Logan and Dustin Lauffer, Christopher Pritchard, and Katherine and Charlie Lauffer; and five great-grandchildren: Aiden and Ethan Hidy, and Maddox, Dierx, and Olivia Lauffer.

Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, KS. Funeral service is at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Protection, KS, with Pastor Brandon Hagins presiding. Burial will follow the funeral service at Protection Cemetery in Protection, KS.
