Elmer Zimmerman, son of the late Jacob and Susan (Horst) Zimmerman, was born October 25, 1892, in Harper County, Kansas, and died September 17, 1959, at Protection, Kansas, at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 23 days. Accidental death was caused by a charged high voltage wire which was blown down during the night and fallen across a fence with which he came in contact while doing chores in the morning. He, with his parents, moved into the Protection Community in
1907 where he spent the remainder of his life. He was interested in many of the community activities and was called upon to serve on the local school board for a number of years. As a successful farmer and business man he became well known and respected in Comanche County and surrounding areas. He accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized January 24, 1909. Having become a member of the Mennonite Church at that time he served the church faithfully in its program, including being Sunday School Superintendent at one time, church trustee and treasurer for more than 30 years, and for many years representative for the Hilfa Plan Farm Insurance. On April 20, 1918, he married the former Erma Troyer, who survives him along with 5 daughters: Mrs Donald (Elsie) Gunden, Goshen, Ind., Mrs Charley (Lois) Lauffer, Protection, Kans. Mrs Roger (Norma) Conrad, Sterling, Ill., Mrs William (Ruby) Stotts, Goshen, Ind., and JoAnn, student at Hesston college; 3 sons: Wayne of Afghanistan, Alfred and Myron, at home; 7 grandchildren; 2 brothers: Harry of Hutchinson and Jacob of Protection, Kans.; and 3 sisters: Mrs Ralph (Ruth) Baker Mable and Susie, all of Protection, Kans.
