Hershell was the 5th son and 7th child of Jesse Louis Barnes and Lillie ‘Mama Pearl’ Hazzard. Born and raised in Comanche County, Texas, he helped work his father’s farm till he married Ms Orpha Dell Walker in 1941. Together they had two children, a son and a daughter, before divorcing in 1976. They must have continued to care for each other, because Dell is said to have returned to care for him during his final days. Hershell died in 1999 as a father and grandfather.
