Charles never married.
Sometime before 1910 Charles purchased a farm with a partner, but in 1910 there was a criminal trial in DuBois County for Charles' attempted rape of a neighbor and extended relative, 15 year old Josie Main (daughter of William T. Main). Charles was sentenced to a prison term of a minimum of 15 years. In 1910 Charles was transferred to the State Prison in Michigan City, Indiana.
on May 7, 1920 Charles was transferred to the hospital for the criminally insane and he died there from pulmonary tuberculosis.
He was buried on May 10, 1920 in Bloomington, Indiana.
