Unexpected death from a coronary attack struck Oscar Rustad, Sacred Heart police officer, while he was on his rounds of duty early Thursday, May 23, 1963. He was 55 years old.

According to Rubin Rustad (no relation) relief police officer, Mr. Rustad became ill at about 1:00 a.m. and summoned him to his home. An ambulance was called, but by the time it arrived Rustad had died.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at two from Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Pastor Morris Eggen of Trinity Lutheran congregation officiating, assisted by Pastor Donald A. Borlaug of Our Saviors. Mrs. Rudolph Nelson was organist, and Mrs. Leslie Zimmer was the vocalist. The pall bearers were Rubin Rustad, Milton Nelson, L.J. Schwinghammer, Otis Edlund, Owen Sheggeby, and Thomas A. Elton. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery.

A number of county and state law enforcement officers attended the rites in honor of Mr. Rustad. He was appointed to the village police position in June of 1962.

Oscar was a lifelong resident of Sacred Heart, having been born here March 12, 1908, to Mr. and Mrs. Christian Rustad. He was educated in the local schools and worked on the home farm. On August 5, 1942, he was called into the army. He served in the European, African and Middle East theatre, receiving his honorable discharge November 15, 1945. He returned to Sacred Heart, where he took employment with Nordstrom and Sagness hardware firm. After the business was sold, Oscar continued in the employ of Harry Sagness in the mortuary business for fifteen years. During this time, he and his wife also conducted a lunch room in Sacret Heart.

Oscar Rustad and Alma Nerdahl of Granite Falls were married on December 26, 1942, at Louisville, Kentucky. She preceded him in death exactly three months ago, on February 23, 1963. They leave a legal ward, David Nerdahl, high school junior. Other survivors are one brother, Palmer Rustad of Sacred Heart and three sisters: Mrs. Gladys Degner and Lenore (Mrs. Arthur Hoff) of Castro Valley, California, and Adeline (Mrs. Jerome Thompson) of Sacred Heart.
