Peter "Pete" Wendelin Lang was born on Jun 11, 1916. His father, Peter Lang Sr, was a farmer near the small unincorporated community of St Peter, Graham County, Kansas. Paul Sr and his wife, Catherine (Rome) had 14 children: Wendelin, Regina (Dreiling), Peter, Albina (Topf), Severina (Rizzolo), Evelyn (Forbis), Anna (Rohleder), Alvin, Albert, Leona (Stone), Florina (Meier), Armella (died in infancy), Clarence, Armella (Kinderknecht).

By the 1940 census, Pete had moved to the village of Techny, Illinois, living at St Mary's Mission home, a seminary for training foreign missions. He worked there as a gardener. On May 20, 1943 in Winnetka, Illinois (License #1773872, Marriage Records of Illinois), Pete married Edna Dorothy Pohlmeier. Edna had been raised a farmgirl in Nebraska, but had moved to Teutopolis, Illinois with her parents. They all worked at St Joseph Minor Seminary where Edna's brother and nephew attended as Franciscan Friars. It is perhaps through these religious communities that the two met.

By the 1950 census, Pete and Edna lived in Northfield, Illinois. Pete worked as a laborer in construction, and Edna worked in a factory. Both were hard workers their entire lives, and lived in the same charmingly small apartment in Northfield. Though they had no children of their own, they doted on their nieces and nephews.
