Edna Dorothy Pohlmeier was born on Mar 26, 1916 on a farm outside of Lawrence, Nebraska. She was the born the 4 of 8 children to Mary (Schroer) and Frank Pohlmeier: Ireanus (Br Ray), Beatrice (Rempe/Jurgensmeier), David (died in childhood), Wilfred (died in infancy), Edna, Herbert, Germaine (Gerry), Alvena.

She spent her childhood growing on the farm. In the 1940s, Edna's parents moved to Teutopolis, Illinois, taking with them their 3 youngest girls: Edna, Gerry, and Alvena. They all worked at St Joseph Minor Seminary where Edna's brother Br Ray Pohlmeier and nephew Br Herb Rempe attended as Franciscan Friars.

It is perhaps through these religious communitees that the two met. By the 1950 census, Pete and Edna lived in Northfield, Illinois. Pete worked as a laborer in construction, and Edna worked in a factory. Both were hard workers their entire lives, and lived in the same charmingly small apartment in Northfield. Though they had no children of their own, they doted on their nieces and nephews.
