The 1850 US Census of Div. 25, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated 35 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr. a farmer born in TN, and his 38 Y/O wife, Winnifred (Winnie) F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. Children in the household were: 11 Y/O John F. Berry, born in AL; 8 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., born at Van Buren, DeKalb Co., AL; 5 Y/O Mary Berry, born in AL and 3 Y/O Hugh P. Berry, born in AL.

The 1860 US Census of Lebanon, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 45 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in TN, and his 48 Y/O wife, Winnifred (Winnie) F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. Children in the household were: 18 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a farm laborer; 15 Y/O Mary Berry; 13 Y/O Pinckney Berry; 9 Y/O Hannah Berry; 5 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., (b. Samuel Ward Berry, Sr. was born into a DeKalb Co., AL farming family and grew up working on his father's (Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr.) large acreage until the American Civil War intervened in his life.

He enlisted at Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL at the age of 22 as a private on 01 Mar 1862 into Company I, Alabama 10th Infantry Regiment and mustered out on 09 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA as a POW after the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, commanding Armies of the United States.

Samuel Ward Berry, Sr.'s regiment participated in the following battles after his enlistment (he was there unless otherwise noted):

He was severely wounded on 17 Sept 1962 during the Battle of Antietam at Sharpsburg, MD., the bloodiest day in American military history. Records show he was paid $69 for his service and clothing from 30 Apr 1862 thru 31 Aug 1862 (see accompanying record). Editorial: Wow! What a military record!!

He married Mary Ann Wilson at Gadsden, AL on 12 June 1863 while on wounded leave. She was the daughter of Joseph Wilson and Celia Edwards of N.C. Samuel returned to duty shortly after his marriage.

Post-Civil War, the 1870 US Census of Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 30 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a civil war veteran and a farmer born in AL. Samuel's 24 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, born in AL (no occupation) was also enumerated in his household. Living in their household was their 5 Y/O daughter, Ada Viola Berry, born in AL, and Samuel's 15 Y/O brother, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., who was attending school. Another occupant of Samuel's household was 48 Y/O "Mary Berry" (housekeeper) listed as "Black". She may have been a retainer from before the Civil War. NOTE: The household next door to Samuel's was that of his parent's, 55 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in TN, and his 58 Y/O wife, Winnifred (Winnie) F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. There is no obvious explanation why their 15 Y/O son, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., wasn't living in his parent's household. Berry, a farmer born in AL, and his 23 Y/O wife, Sarah M. (Ventress) Berry, born in TN (See 1850 census above). Living in their household was their 1 Y/O son, Francis L. Berry. Other occupants of the household were: Sarah M. (Ventress) Berry's 45 Y/O widowed mother, Mary E. Ventress, born in TN and Sarah's 21 Y/O brother, Aaron Ventress, born in TN.

By 1880 Samuel had moved to "Ball Play and Turkeytown", Etowah Co., AL and his household was enumerated in the 1880 US Census: 38 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a miller/farmer, and his 35 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry. The 1880 census recorded that he was born in Alabama. All subsequent US Censuses (1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930) indicated he was born in Louisiana. Living in the 1880 household were their children: 11 Y/O Ada Viola Berry; 9 Y/O Edwin Walker Berry; 6 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry and 2 Y/O Josie (Josephine) Brindley Berry.

An 17 Dec 1884 Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL indenture records Samuel Ward Berry, Sr. and his wife, Mary A. Berry, purchasing the Wilson Warehouse for $500.00. This old building has been preserved and is now in the Pioneer Village at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, AL.

The 1900 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 58 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a farmer born in AL, and his 55 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, born in AL. Living in the household were their children: 29 Y/O Edwin Walker Berry, 26 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, 22 Y/O Josie (Josephine) Brindley Berry, 17 Y/O Bonnie E. Samuel Ward Berry, Sr. died in 1901. Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, his widow, applied for his Civil War pension on 02 Apr 1925. She died on 23 Feb 1937 at Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL at the ripe old age of 91 and is buried near him.

As noted above, David A. Gramling married Dana B. Berry on 25 Dec 1914 in Etowah Co., AL (Alabama Marriage Indexes 1814-1935). In 1916, the Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL City Directory recorded David A. Gramling (a clerk) and his wife, Dana.

The 1920 US Census of Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 32 Y/O David Alonzo Gramling, a salesman in a supply store born in AL, and his 31 Y/O wife, Dana B. Gramling, born in AL. Living in the household were their children: 3 years 6 months old David Alonzo Grambling, Jr. and 2 Y/O Bonney Luther Gramling, named after Dana (Berry) Gramling's brother, Bonney Edward Berry.
