The 1860 US Census of Lebanon, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 45 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in Tennessee, and his 48 Y/O wife, Winnifred [Winnie] F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. Children in the household were: 18 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a farm laborer; 15 Y/O Mary Berry; 13 Y/O Pinckney Berry; 9 Y/O Hannah Berry; 5 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (b. October 1854-See 1900 Census of Bell Co., TX)

Post-Civil War, the 1870 US Census of Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 55 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in TN, and his 58 Y/O wife, Winnifred [Winnie] F. (Ward) Berry, born in South Carolina. NOTE: Enumerated in the household next door was their 30 Y/O son, Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a civil war veteran and a farmer born in AL. Samuel's 24 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, born in AL (no occupation) was also enumerated in his household. Living in their household was their 5 Y/O daughter, Ada Viola Berry, born in AL, and Samuel W. Berry's 15 Y/O brother, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., who was attending school. There is no obvious explanation why Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. wasn't living in his parent's household next door. Another occupant of Samuel's household was 48 Y/O "Mary Berry" (Housekeeper) listed as "Black". She may have been a retainer from before the Civil War.

The 1870 US Census of Acworth, Cobb Co., GA enumerated the household of 35 [sic] Y/O William Foster, a farmer born in Georgia, and his 25 Y/O wife, Martha [Martha Rachael (Hurt) Foster], born in Georgia. Living in the household were their 5 children including 3 Y/O Julia Aann Foster, born in Georgia. Julia Ann Foster would later marry Andrew Jackson Berry.

The 1880 US Census of DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 63 Y/O (actual age 65) Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in Tennessee, and his 64 Y/O (actual age 68) wife, Winnie (Winnifred), born in South Carolina. Also in the household was their "25 Y/O" son, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?), a farm laborer (b. October 1854-See 1900 Census of Bell Co., TX). **On this census page, all three members of this household were recorded as being born in "Ohio" which was a gross enumeration error**. Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr. was born in Tennessee; Winnifred F. "Winnie" (Ward) Berry was born in South Carolina and their son, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?) was born in Alabama.

Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?) married Julia Ann Foster on 16 Oct 1887 at Etowah Co., AL. The ceremony was performed by Oliver E. Usry, a Justice of the Peace. (Reference: Alabama Marriage Index 1809-1920).

The 1900 US Census of Bell Co., TX enumerated the household of 45 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. and his 33 Y/O wife, Julia Ann (Foster) Berry, born in Acworth, Cobb Co., Georgia. This census specifically states that Julia Ann (Foster) Berry was born in November 1866 and that Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. was born in October 1854. It also correctly recorded that they had been married 12 years and stated that Andrew was working as a "fruit tree solicitor" in 1900. Living in the household were their children, the first 3 of whom were born in AL: 11 Y/O Thurman W. Berry (b. July 1888); 10 Y/O Ellis Cannon Berry (b. 24 Oct 1889 at Attalla, AL) and their 3rd child, 6 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (actually the "III") [b. October 1893]. Their 4th child, 3 Y/O daughter, "Winnie" Winnifred Thelma Berry was born in October 1896 in Texas indicating the family migrated to Texas between October 1893 and October 1896. This child was named after her grandmother, Winnifred "Winnie" F. (Ward) Berry (1811-1892), the wife of Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr. (1815-1888).

The 1910 US Census of Ward 1, Chickasha, Grady Co., Oklahoma enumerated the household of 55 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., a salesman, house clerk born in AL, and his 45 Y/O wife, Julia A. (Foster) Berry, born in Georgia. Living in the household were their children: 20 Y/O Ellis Cannon Berry; 16 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (actually the "III"); 14 Y/O "Winnie" Winnifred Thelma Berry; 8 Y/O Paul W. Berry, and son, 6 Y/O Myrl Avril Berry, (b. 08 Oct 1904 in OK-d. 18 Nov 1972 in OK). The census page specifically states that Andrew and his wife, Julia, had been married 23 years which confirms their 1887 marriage date mentioned above. NOTE: "Winnie" Winnifred Thelma Berry, age 17, married Oliver B. Johnson, age 25, on 29 Sep 1913 at Chickasha, Grady Co., Oklahoma. The ceremony was performed by the Baptist Minister, George W. Sherman. Both bride and groom were residents of Chickasha, Grady Co., Oklahoma. Winnie's father, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?) gave permission via "phone" for the marriage of his under-aged daughter, possibly indicating he wasn't well. NOTE: This 1913 marriage record is the last record of Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (1854-1913?) so his death date was probably in 1913 or shortly afterward.

This seems to be confirmed by the 12 Apr 1919 marriage of 52 Y/O Mrs. Julia Berry of Chickasha, Grady Co., Oklahoma to 67 Y/O Mack Rolater of Lexington, Cleveland Co., OK. The wedding ceremony was performed in Guthrie, Logan Co., OK by W. H. Hornaday, Justice of the Peace.

The 1920 US Census of Ward 4, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK enumerated the household of 67 Y/O Mack Rolater, born in South Carolina, and his 53 Y/O wife, Julia A. Rolater, born in GA. Also living in the household was 15 Y/O Myrl Avril Rolater, born in Oklahoma. NOTE: Myrl Avril Perry was a son of Julia A. (Foster) Berry and her first husband, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. In this 1920 census, Myrl's surname was enumerated as "Rolater" instead of "Berry". This was probably an enumeration error because I don't believe Mack Rolater had time or inclination to adopt him between the date of his marriage to Julia Berry (12 Apr 1919) and the enumeration date of the 1920 census (02 Jan 1920) although Myrl was enumerated as "son" not "stepson" of Mack Rolater.

NOTE: Interestingly and confusingly, a 17 Sept 1921 marriage record between 69 Y/O Mack Rolater of Lexington, Cleveland Co., OK and 55 Y/O Mary Julia A. Berry of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK was performed in Canadian Co., OK. Canadian County borders Oklahoma County on the east and Cleveland County on the southeast. This wedding ceremony was performed by C. A. Bannister, Justice of the Peace. NOTE: To further confuse things, a 14 Jan 1923 marriage record between 69 [sic] Y/O Mack Rolater of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK and 55 [sic] Y/O Mrs. Julia Berry of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK was performed by J. E. Latham, a Presbyterian Minister at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK. These three marriages by Mack Rolater and the widow, Julia Ann (Foster) Berry, to each other is an example of unexplainable family dynamics.

The 1925 Oklahoma City Directory recorded Mrs. Julia Rolater living alone on Agnew Ave. No occupation was listed and there was no record of her husband, Mack Rolater, in the directory. I suspect Mack Rolater was deceased by this time.

Starting in 1927 the Oklahoma City Directory recorded Julia Rolater as Julia A. Berry (widow of Andrew Jackson Berry) living on Agnew Ave. She had assumed her first husband's surname name for reasons of her own. Living near-by was her son, Myrl Avril Berry, a baker at Schmidt Brother's Baking Co., and his wife, Beulah M. (Deshazer) Berry, born on 30 May 1909 in OK (see her tombstone). They had married on 23 Sept 1924 in Oklahoma City (their marriage license recorded Beulah's age as 18 Y/O, obviously untrue, it was 15 Y/O). Beulah's middle initial is recorded as both "A" and "M".

The 1935, 1938 and 1939 Oklahoma City Directories recorded Julia A. Berry, widow of Andrew Jackson Berry, living on Agnew Ave. Living near-by was her son, Myrl Avril Perry, a shipping clerk at Red Stat Yeast & Products Co., and his wife, Beulah A. (Deshazer) Berry.

The 1940 US Census of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK enumerated the 74 Y/O widow, Julia Berry, living alone with no occupation. Also enumerated at a distance in a separate household was Julia's 35 Y/O son, Myrl Avril Berry, a salesman in the yeast industry. Also living in the household was his 30 Y/O wife, Beulah A. (Deshazer) Berry, a wholesale bacon packer. Their three children, ages 8-13 Y/O, were also residing in their household.

The 1941, 1945, 1947 and 1949 Oklahoma City Directories recorded Julia A. Berry, widow of Andrew Jackson Berry. Julia died in 1951 at Oklahoma City. These same city directories recorded Julia's son, Myrl Avril Berry, employed in the baking industry and his wife, Beulah A. (Deshazer) Berry. Myrl Avril Berry died on 18 Nov 1972 and his wife, Beulah, died on 04 May 2002, both at Oklahoma City, OK.
