Post-Civil War, by 1870, Samuel Ward Berry, Sr. had his own farm adjacent to his father's in Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL. The 1870 US Census of Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL enumerated the household of 55 Y/O Andrew Jackson Berry, Sr., a farmer born in TN, and his 58 Y/O wife, Winnie F. Berry born in South Carolina. NOTE: Enumerated in the household next door was their 30 Y/O son, Samuel Ward Berry, a farmer, and his 24 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, no occupation. Also living in the household were their 5 Y/O daughter, Ada Viola Berry and Samuel's 17 Y/O brother, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr., a student. Interestingly, also living in the household was 48 Y/O "Mary Berry" (Housekeeper) listed as "Black". She may have been a retainer from before the Civil War.

By 1880 Samuel had moved to Play Ball and Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL and his household was enumerated: 38 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a miller/farmer born in AL, and his 35 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, born in AL. All subsequent US Censuses (1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930) indicated Samuel was born in Louisiana. Also living in their 1880 household were their children: 11 Y/O Ada Viola Berry; 9 Y/O Edwin Walker Berry; 6 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry and 2 Y/O Josie (Josephine) B. Berry.

It appears that Ada Viola Berry died unmarried and childless.
