Mary Ann Wilson's parents were Joseph Wilson (born circa 1815 in N. C.) and Celia Edwards (born circa 1819 in N. C.).

The 1860 US Census of District 1, Cherokee Co., AL enumerated the household of 44 Y/O Joseph Wilson, a machinist, and his 41 Y/O wife, Celia (Edwards) Wilson. Also living in the household were their children: 15 Y/O Mary Ann Wilson, 13 Y/O Hannah J. Wilson, 10 Y/O Andrew J. Wilson, 8 Y/O William P. Wilson, 5 Y/O Erastus H. Berry, 3 Y/O Joseph A. Berry and 1 month old John W. Wilson.

Mary Ann married Samuel Ward Berry at Gadsden, AL on 12 June 1863 when he was on wounded leave while serving the Confederacy during the "War Between the States". Samuel returned to duty shortly after his marriage.

Post-war, by 1870, Samuel had his own farm adjacent to his father's in Collinsville, DeKalb Co., AL. Also in the household was their 5 Y/O daughter, Ada Viola Berry. Samuel's 17 Y/O brother, Andrew Jackson Berry, Jr. (Attending School) was also living in their household. Also enumerated in the household was 48 Y/O "Mary Berry" (Housekeeper) listed as "Black". She may have been a retainer from before the Civil War.

By 1880 Samuel had moved to "Ball Play and Turkeytown", Etowah Co., AL and his household was enumerated in the 1880 US Census: 38 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a miller/farmer, and his 35 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry. The 1880 census recorded that he was born in Alabama. All subsequent US Censuses (1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930) indicated he was born in Louisiana. An 17 Dec 1884 Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL indenture records Samuel Ward Berry, Sr. and his wife, Mary A. Berry, purchasing the Wilson Warehouse for $500.00. This old building has been preserved and is now in the Pioneer Village at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, AL.

The 1900 US Census of Turkeytown, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 58 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Sr., a farmer born in AL, and his 55 Y/O wife, Mary Ann (Wilson) Berry, born in AL. Living in the household were their children: 29 Y/O Edwin Walker Berry, 26 Y/O Joseph Wilson Berry, 22 Y/O Josie (Josephine) B. Berry, 17 Y/O Bonnie E. Berry, 14 Y/O Samuel Ward Berry, Jr., and 13 Y/O Dena (Dana) B. Berry.

Samuel Ward Berry had died in 1901 and Mary Ann Berry, his widow, applied for his Civil War pension on 02 Apr 1925. She died on 23 Feb 1937 at Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL at the ripe old age of 91 and is buried near him.

The 1913 Birmingham, AL City Directory recorded Miss Dana B. Berry as a stenographer. The 1914 Gadsden, Alabama City Directory recorded Miss Dana Berry as a clerk for the Gadsden Hardware Company. As noted above, David A. Gramling married Dana B. Berry on 25 Dec 1914 in Etowah Co., AL (Alabama Marriage Indexes 1814-1935). In 1916, the Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL City Directory recorded David A. Gramling (a clerk) and his wife, Dana.

The 1920 US Census of Gadsden, Etowah Co., AL enumerated the household of 32 Y/O David Alonzo Gramling, a salesman in a supply store born in AL, and his 31 Y/O wife, Dana B. Gramling, born in AL. Living in the household were their children: 3 years 6 months old David Alonzo Grambling, Jr. and 2 Y/O Bonney Luther Gramling, named after Dana (Berry) Gramling's brother, Bonney Edward Berry.
