Austin O. Berney, 97, of Wolbach died Sunday, Nov 10, 2002 at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley.
Services will be at 10:30 am Thursday Nov 14 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach. Roger Grim will oficiate. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery at Wolbach.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 pm Wednesday at the church in Wolbach. Memorials are suggested to the family. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Berney was born Feb 11, 1905 in Greeley County to John and Emma (Imus) Berney. He attended rural school District #27 in Greeley County. He then attended Wolbach High School and Grand Island Business College. After school he farmed northeast of Wolbach with his parents.
He married Lillian Horn on Nov 30, 1936 at Grand Island. The couple lived in the Wolbach area for 5 years and in 1941 moved to Detroit, where they lived for 1 year. In 1942 they returned to Wolbach, where they farmed east of town until 1960.
In 1961 they moved to Wolbach until February of 2000 when he moved into the Greeley Care Home.
He was a self-taught musician, playing the piano, drums, violin, banjo and participating in the Berney Band for nearly 50 years. He was a farmer, carpenter and painter. He also enjoyed playing and following sports.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Val Jean Berney of Fremont, Richard and Sherry Berney of Wolbach and Steve and Julie Berney of Fort Collins, Colo; a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Joe Stoffel of Wolbach; 9 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and a sister-in-law, Loyal (Tike) and Katherine Berney of Trenton, Mo. and Carroll Berney of Dayton, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Willa Berney of Wolbach.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Reid; a grandchild; and 7 brothers, Frank, Erroll, Lawrence, William, Ivan, Raymond and Reid Berney.
