Hardy J. Magee Funeral Services At Local Chapel
Funeral services for Hardy J. Magee, 98, probably Marion County's oldest white citizen, were held from the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home at 2 P.M. on Saturday. Officiating was the Rev. John D. Williams, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, assisted by the Rev. Frank E. Bradley of Mobile, Ala.
Special music included by vocal duets, "Beyond the Sunset," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and In the Sweet Bye and Bye," by Mrs. John D. Williams and Mrs. Dick Spence with Mrs. Williams playing the organ accompaniment.
Interment was in Woodlawn cemetery under direction of Colonial Funeral Home.
Active pallbearer, grandsons of Mr. Magee, were Grayson Magee, Edsel Magee, Charles Truitt Magee, Herbert J. Magee, Lawrence Weatherford and Grayson Bryant.
Honorary pallbearer were Asa Bufkin, Melvin Farmer, Dr. Vernon Terrell, Jack Shepard, the Rev. W. H. Marsh, Buddy Autry, Victor H. Bruce, Dr. Richard Campbell, Vernon Douglas and Barney Broom.
Mr. Magee died at 11:20 A.M. Friday at Marion County General Hospital after having been a patient there since the last of December. He had been ill since October and entered the local hospital for the first hospitalization of his life.
He was born in Jefferson Davis County July 8, 1864, during the Civil War, son of Thomas J. and Mary Broom Magee. He lived his entire lifetime near Bassfield and at Bunker Hill.
Mr. Magee was a farmer during his active life and maintained his love of farming and interest in farming affairs until his last days.
He came to Bunker Hill from the Bassfield area in 1937 and in both communities was well known and beloved. He and his wife had marked their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary.
Mr. Magee was a member of the local Assembly of God church.
Preceding him in death were a son, Herbert Magee, who died in 1922, a daughter, Mrs. George Fiveash, who died in 1953, and a grandson, Aubrey Fiveash, who was killed in action in World War II while serving with the army in Italy.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maggie Baker Magee of Bunker Hill; four sons, Forrest Magee of Columbia, Dempsey Magee of Stockton, Calif., Howard Magee of Pascagoula and Homer Magee of Foxworth; two daughters, Mrs. E. S. Williams of Columbia and Mrs. Dymple Walton of Meridian; one brother, Lauren Magee of Smyrna, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Lula Wilks of Gulfport; thirty-six grandchildren; and forty-four great-grandchildren.
