Mrs. Lela Belle Smith
Dies; Services Today

Mrs. Lela Bell Smith, 74, of 6 Cardinal Drive, died Saturday following an attack suffered a few minutes earlier.

Mrs. Smith was born in Dalton August 31, 1886, daughter of the late Jess and Betty Bell Oaks. She had spent the greater part of her life in Rome and Floyd County, coming here from Dalton. At the time of her death, she was making her home with a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Hardin. She was a member of the Baptist church and was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh D. Smith, Sept. 26, 1956.

Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Mamie Sprayberry of Taylorsville, Mrs. Irene Mize, Mrs. Julia Sprayberry, Mrs. Thelma Barber, Mrs. Margaret Hardin and Mrs. Hazel Hardin, all of Rome; two sons, Hugh Don and Paul Smith of Rome; three sisters, Mrs. Carrie Smith of Rome, Mrs. Eunice Jones of Calhoun and Mrs. Della Blankenship of Plains, Ga.; six brothers, Jim, Hart, Ernest and Jess Oaks, all of Rome, Luther Oaks of Detroit Mich., and Lewis Oaks of Atlanta. Forty-five grandchildren and forty-one great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were to be held at 4 p.m. today at Pisgah Baptist Church and the pastor, The Rev. Robert Lloyd and the Rev. W. F. Cass, officiating. Interment will be in Pisgah Cemetery.

Six grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
