Elmore Preston Underwood was the son of David Moses Underwood and Sarah Elizabeth Foster. He was known as 'Mode', but no one in this generation knows why.

He married Eveline Belcher in Barren Co, Kentucky on Apr 7, 1878. They moved to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (later Oklahoma) from Kentucky in 1887. He and his brother, Jasper, settled the community of Hoxbar where he operated a cotton gin.

He was visiting at the home of his daughter, Rose Hill in Weatherford, Parker Co, Texas when he died. He was buried next to his wife in Oklahoma.
