Mr. John Walter Montgomery Jr. passed away Friday May 2nd, 2014 at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, Missouri at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 4 days.
John was born March 29th, 1923 in Caruthersville, Missouri to John Montgomery and Velma Treece Montgomery. He was united in marriage to Lena McCutchen on December 20th, 1945 in Osceola, Arkansas.
John was a lifetime resident of the Bootheel area and attended school in Pemiscot County. He worked at various jobs throughout his life with his primary employers being Betz Tipton Box Company and Chris Craft Manufacturing. He was fun loving and outgoing and received some of his greatest joys in life while helping to raise and nurture his children. He was well known throughout the area and was always willing to help friends and neighbors in times of need. He attended Oasis Worship Center and was very active in church work prior to failing health. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
John is survived by two daughters; Patricia Slentz and Diane Hudgins both of Caruthersville, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Preceding John in death were his parents, John and Velma Montgomery, his wife, Lena Montgomery, a daughter, Kathy Davis, a son, Johnny L. Montgomery, a son-in-law Brady Slentz, three brothers, Paul Robert, Sterling and Charley Montgomery and four sisters, Cladie Barnes, Lester Sherwood, Mary Jarboe and Fern Wilson Smith.
Pallbearers for Mr. Montgomery were; Edward Davis, Livi Davis, Greg Slentz Brett Hudgins, Chris Gibbens and Christopher Gibbens.
Visitation for Mr. Montgomery was Tuesday, May 6th, 2014 in the Chapel at H.S. Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services were held immediately following the visitation with Pastor Kenny Lee officiating. Interment was in Little Prairie Cemetery in Caruthersville.
