Benjamin was the fourth of five known children born to his parents. His mother was the third wife of his father and he had three half siblings, one who died in infancy. His father a farmer in Carroll Township, Perry County. Benjamin became a farmer, in general farming in several townships in Cumberland County, at least through 1910, and then was returned as a laborer in the 1920 census.
