George enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 21 November 1861 for three years and served as a 2nd Class Fireman on the USS Kearsarge during the famous battle off the coast of Cherbourg, France against the CSS Alabama on 19 June 1864.
He was born 15 Dec 1829 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the son of George J Smart and Mary Staples. He died on 13 January 1881 of pneumonia at age 50.
George first married on 25 February 1849 in Portsmouth, NH, Lydia Pettigrew Smart who died 15 April 1856.
They had the following children:
