Robert was a Civil War Veteran having served in 16th NH Inf Co.K. He enlisted 13 October 1862 in Portsmouth, NH.
He was the son of George J Smart and
Mary Staples
On 16 October 1858 he married Sarah Nowell Allen. The marriage ceremony was performed by Jonathan Hall, Pastor of the Methodist Church in Portsmouth.
Prior to entering service to his country he was a Sparmaker by trade. According to his military file he was 6 ft tall, had blue eyes, dark hair and was of fair complexion.
He died at St. Joseph's Hospital in New Orleans of Typhoid Fever and was originally buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery then was reinterred in Chalmette National Cemetery.
He and Sarah had the following children:
Margaret Gertrude who married
1. William O. Stearns 2. John Henry Turner
Robert Frederick Jr. born 2 November 1860 & who married Mary A Gregory.
Frank Albert born 12 January 1863 who married Mary Maud Wilkinson.
