Moriah, as she was called, was the daughter of George J Smart and Lydia B. Nutter. By all accounts of those who knew her, she was a kindly lady who had a peaceful manner about her. She worked as a companion and secretery to several prominent Portsmouth families.

Miss Maria Smart Marks 92nd Year

Two birthday cakes, flowers and fruits were sent to Miss Maria Smart of Pleasant street today as she observed her 92nd birthday. Miss Ethel Smart and Mrs Fred G. Procter both of Portsmouth brought the cakes which Miss Smart shared with her companions at the Wentworth home.
The oldest member of the Advent Christian church, Miss Smart does not attend services often as she is quite feeble. She entered the home in March, 1936, and last year attended her church reunion.
A native of Portsmouth, she has five nephews, John W., Roland, Clarence, Thurston and Harvey Smart, all of Portsmouth; two nieces, Mrs Milton Brewster and Mrs. Beatrice Hoyt, both of whom reside in Portsmouth.

The following is a transcription of a letter written upon the death of Maria which is in the possession of this biographer.

Miss Maria Smart

At Portsmouth, NH June 15th, 1945 aged 93 years.
Sister Smart died in the Wentworth Home, where she was much loved and tenderly cared for untill (sic) death. She was the oldest member of the Portsmouth Church and was received into membership in the year 1870.
She maintained her interest in the church and until the very last and will be remembered for her long term of service. Her picture can be seen in the dedication book of the new church building which was published in 1941 at the time of the dedication.
The Pastor and members of the church have suffered a great loss in the death of this saint of God. To visit her in her room at the Wentworth Home was an inspiration and a challenge. The sweet aroma of her life makes fragrant the atmosphere of our church and is of far greater importance, then (sic) walls, organs, windows and altars.
Organ music was played at the funeral by Miss Pricilla Marshall.
