George raised his family in the house that was built by his father, Cap't Richard D. Smart, with monies he procurred as a privateer during the War of 1812. This home remained in the Smart family and gave shelter to several generations of Smart's being raised there. In 1975 the home left the Smart family with the death of Roland Smart, George's grandson.

His stone reads:
In memory of George J. Smart who died Oct. 12, 1877,
Aged 74 yrs.
The night cometh, when no man can work John 9:4

George and Mary (Staples) are this biographer's third great grandparents.

This biographer is honored to be the custodian of the photographs of George J and Lydia (Nutter) Smart that are on this page. They were passed down from my cousin, the late Philip H. Smart to my other cousin, Carlton Chamberlain who in turn passed them on to me. I thank both of them for entrusting them in my care. djg
