On 09 October 1845 in Portsmouth he married Lydia B. Nutter who was born 09 Dec 1818 in Portsmouth and died 16 January 1892.
They had the following children:

Maria aka "Moriah"

Melvina
George raised his family in the house that was built by his father, Cap't Richard D. Smart, with monies he procurred as a privateer during the War of 1812. This home remained in the Smart family and gave shelter to several generations of Smart's being raised there. In 1975 the home left the Smart family with the death of Roland Smart, George's grandson.
His stone reads:
In memory of George J. Smart who died Oct. 12, 1877,
Aged 74 yrs.
