Robert Joseph Matthew Woodman was named for his father, Robert Alfred Woodman, and his two grandfathers: Joseph Southby and Matthew Woodman. He was born in Camberwell, Middlesex, England to Robert and Lucretia Jessie Southby Woodman.

Robert married Emily Aurelia Morgan on February 19, 1881 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had at least five children: Charles Alfred; Harold "Harry" Roy; Effie "Midge" E.; Jessie (female); and Violet Emily "Babe" Woodman.

From about 1889 and into the early 1900s, all of Robert's siblings and his mother moved to California, most landing in Riverside. Some went to Long Beach and Los Angeles County. Robert was the only one staying in Ohio.

Robert J. Woodman, 79, for many years a Shakespearean actor, died May 22 at his home in Cleveland. Mr. Woodman came to Cleveland 65 years ag, and was associated with the Fred Ward and John Ellsler stock company in Shakespearean repertoire. He retired from the stage several years ago and had been engaged in the paint business there.

Survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters. Interment in Cleveland.
