The first significant event of his life was his service in the 26th North Carolina Inf., CSA. His military record states that he was "conspicuous for his gallant conduct in every engagement.". He survived the Battle of Gettysburg but bore a head wound which eventually cost him his eyesight.
According to family oral tradition, John Houck's sisters hid in a cave during Stoneman's Raid.
After the war, he married Margaret Caroline Puett, daughter of W. Johnson Puett and Mary McCall. They had three children, Gamewell Puett Houck (married Cora Belle Deal), Anna Elizabeth Phifer Houck (married Jacob Harshaw), and Mary Matilda Houck (married John Harshaw).
In 1901, he married Rosa Lee Jones, and they had one son, John George Phifer Houck, and a step-daughter, Rosetta. He and Rosa Lee were divorced.
Many stories of John Houck's are still rumbling around the North Carolina foothills, leaving no doubt that he was quite a character.
