Anna Catherine was the daughter of Elizabeth Cole Phifer and Aaron Link. Family tradition has it that she was born "in sight of Baker's Mountain" in Catawba Co., NC. Baptismal records and census records list her brothers and sisters as Henry Jacob Link (b. 16 Jan. 1827); John Madison Link (4 Jan 1829-20 April 1914); Susan Ruth Link (31 August 1837); Mary Link (unknown). There may have been other children.

Anna Catherine married Leander Houck in November 1842 in Lincoln County, NC. Their children were: Martha Elizabeth Houck; John Marion Houck; Robert Caldwell Houck; Henry Lafayette "Fate" Houck; Franklin Clay Houck; William Kelley Houck; Mary Alice Houck; Laura J. Houck; Walter Edward Houck; Anna Dora Houck; Ella Flora Houck; Jerome Cole "Sidney" Houck.

Anna and Leander lived for many years in the Greasy Creek area of Caldwell County. When her husband died, he was buried near the house with some Link children and perhaps a few infants. She remained active into her eighties, visiting relatives and taking part in family affairs. Anna Catherine maintained property in Caldwell County including the Houck School, but eventually went to live with her daughter and namesake Annie LaFevre in Rutherford College, Burke County, NC. There she died of old age.
