"Matt" Poovey was the eldest daughter of Leander Houck and Anna Catherine Link. She was born shortly after they moved to Lenoir, NC.

She married Civil War veteran Julius Alexander Poovey on 28 March, 1867. They lived near Hickory, NC. He ran a brickyard, and many bricks in the original buildings of Hickory were fired there.

Their children were Cora Lou, b. c. 1868, married 1. Henry Frye; 2.Luther Flannigan; Caroline "Carrie" Mildred,b. 19 Mar. 1870; Alice "Emma" Emmerette,b. 1 Aug 1872, married Charles D. Bolch; Lloyd Willard Lee, b. 29 July 1874, married Nancy T. Reid; Bessie Mae Della, b. 29 Aug. 1876, married Joseph William Hanna; William Edgar "Ed" b. 17 Nov. 1878, married Mabel Stroupe; Robey Franklin, b. 20 Sept. 1881,m. 1. Willie Em Houser 2. Cora Bean Walker; Clarence Ray, b. 9 Jan. 1886, married Candace Londa Huffman; and little Rosella, b. 25 Aug. 1888 died 11 Aug. 1890.

Martha Poovey lived to be 101 years old.
