"Syd" was a son of Leander and Anna Catherine Link Houck. He was born near Lenoir, Caldwell County, North Carolina, and grew up in that area. Like his brothers, Jerome was educated in the carpenter's trade and he showed a gift not only in carpentry but in wood carving. As a young man he moved to Ojai, California and was wed to Trevelyan Gweneth Walls. They had three sons: Jerome Cole Houck, Jr., Hawley Holyoke Houck, and Hobart Leander Houck. The Houcks grew oranges and Syd continued his work in wood.
