CHARLES CALVIN ASHLEY

At six o'clock Monday morning,Oct.7th 1929,Charles Calvin Ashley passed into the great beyond after nearly five months of constant suffering. He was taken seriously ill with pneumonia May 11,1929 at the home of his daughter, Mrs.Arthur(Ruby)Prosser. During this long illness all that tender care and loving thought would suggest was done by his devoted family. He was very patient, always grateful for every kindness shown him, never complaining even after he grew very weary. It is worth of commendation that he was a father who had the respect of his children so much that not one of them ever gave him an unkind or discourteous word.

Charles Ashley was born at Frankfort, June 5,1850. When he was a small boy he came to Winfield to live. On June 16,1872 he was married to Miss Mary Harrington of Pittsfield. With the exception of short periods of time they have always made their home in this locality. To this union,12 children were born of whom nine are living. One daughter died in infancy(Ella), one son at the age of 13(Leonard) and a daughter, Edna, Mrs. Lumen Chase at the age of 25. The following sons and daughters together with the wife survive him: Mrs. Barney Mariotte of West Winfield; Mrs. Amanda Spencer, Mrs. Arthur Prosser; Mrs. Lynn Chase, Mrs. Julius Chase; Mrs. Frank Sconetic, Otis Ashley and Mrs. Ernest Webb all of Pittsfield; and George Ashley of Lyons Falls. Three sisters: Mrs. Josephine Cowles, Richfield Springs; Mrs. Millard Alvord and Mrs. Emory Hall of Frankfort; and three brothers: William Ashley of Ilion; Otis Ashley Sr., and John Ashley of Frankfort. 24 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren also mourn his loss.

The funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Arthur Prosser. The attendance was large and the floral pieces many and beautiful. The services were conducted by Rev. Helen S. Traver, pastor of the First Christian Church of Pittsfield. Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery.

Dearest Father thou has left us,
Here our loss we deeply feel,
But 'tis God who has bereft us,
He can all our sorrows heal.

(Obituary was published in the Norwich Sun)
