A native of Mitchell, South Dakota, Endres came to Austin in the fall of 1969 to establish Gerard School for emotionally disturbed children at the estate home of Jay C Hormel. He later expanded the facilities to Mason City, Iowa in the summer of 1973 at the McNider Mansion.
Gerard House, a halfway residence for emotionally disturbed children was established as part of the Gerard program in Austin in September 1973. After the program expanded extensively since its origin, Endres began an accreditation program which was finalized with the granting of certification by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals in February 1975. He authored or co-authored several articles for national publication on the residential treatment concept for the emotionally disturbed child.
He graduated from the University of Utah with a Master's Degree in Psychiatric Social Work. He was also a graduate of St Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas, and was a student and an observer of residential treatment centers in Europe. Locally, Endres was active in the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club and was a member of St Augustine's Church. He served as past president of the Minnesota Council of Residential Treatment Centers, was a fellow with the American Ortho Psychiatric Association. of Voluntary Social Services Agencies. He served as tri-chairman of the Catholic education fund drive in 1974.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Thomas and Todd of Austin; seven brothers, Donald, Melvin, Delbert Endres, Grand Forks, North Dakota Les Endres, Brainerd, Minnesota; Kenneth and Junior Endres, Madison, South Dakota; William Endres of California; a sister, Mrs William (Ileen) Meinen, Akron, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Monday at St Augustine Catholic Church. Interment will be at Mitchell, South Dakota. A wake service will be held at 8 pm Sunday at the Mayer Funeral Home, Austin. Friends may call after 3 pm Sunday.
