Com. Reese, 66, Is Dead; Served County 14 Years
William Reese, 66, county commissioner representing the 1st district, died Tuesday noon at his residence at 201 Delaware street after being critically ill for several weeks. For weeks before that he was unable to go to the courthouse to meet with commissioners.

Com. Reese would have completed 14 years in office in January, with 2 more years yet to serve in the current term, commissioners being elected for 4 years, so it will be necessary to appoint someone to serve out his unexpired term. This is done by other members of the board. At present the board is divided, one member being democrat, the other republican. Mr. Reese was a republican. New commissioners take office in January, also one republican one democrat.

Com. Reese is survived by his widow, sons, William, in Hiawatha, Ben., Wesley, Ed, who live on farms northeast of Hiawatha in the neighborhood where the commissioner lived until he moved into Hiawatha in 1924, brothers, Ed, of Hiawatha, Charles, of Blackwell, Okla., August, of Nardin, Okla., sisters, Mrs. Emma Tolle, of Harper, Kans., Mrs. Charles Conaway, of Deer Creek, Okla., Mrs. Paul Moore, of Robinson. All are here now except Mrs. Conaway.

Com. Reese was born in 1870 near Quincy, Ill., on a farm, the son of Mr. Mrs. Carl Reese. He attended country school in Illinois, moving with his parents to Kansas in 1882, the family settling near White Cloud in Irving township. He attended Hill Top school, then Heckler school before engaging in farming. In 1895 he was married to Ella Tolle.

For 12 years Com. Reese lived in Robinson township at the place Frank Hathaway now lives, near Prairie Springs schoolhouse, then moved to Irving township where he lived 17 years, at the farm where his son, Ben, now lives. In 1924 Com. and Mrs. Reese moved into Hiawatha, where they have since made their home.

Always considerate of others, Com. Reese found it more difficult to stay out of public office than to be elected. He was a member of either the Prairie Springs or Shore rural school boards for so many years he lost count. He was also Irving township trustee for 2 years. When people of the 1st commissioner district, made up of Irving, Padonia, Hiawatha, Robinson townships, elected him county commissioner, they were so pleased with their choice they re-elected him thru the years. When Com. Reese first took office roads were little better than paths. Thru his efforts, as well as those of other officials, improvements were made which will have a lasting effect on Brown county history.
