E. H. Reese, Former Mayor, Dies Early Monday Morning
Edward H. Reese, 75, of Hiawatha, died Monday morning, February 11, 1974, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, where he had been readmitted January 14. He was born May 24, 1898, near Robinson, the son of William and Ella Tolle Reese.
He had farmed for many years near White Cloud, moving to Hiawatha in 1955. Ed as he was affectionately known by all, was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha.
A member of the Board of Directors of the Morrill & Janes Bank and Trust Co., he had served as a trustee of the Brown-Atchison County REA, and was instrumental in bringing electricity to area farmers. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Hiawatha Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Mt. Hope Cemetery Board.
Mr. Reese received the W. G. Skelly Award for outstanding achievement in agriculture, and had served as mayor of Hiawatha for nine years.
He was married to Marie Meier in Fairview on March 3, 1920. She survives at the home. He is also survived by three sons, Dean Reese and Charles Reese, both of rural White Cloud, and Don Reese of Brownwood, Texas; one brother, Wesley Reese of Hiawatha and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Funeral services will be held from the First United Methodist Church at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, February 13, with the Rev. Wayne Castle officiating. Interment will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery.
