Elizabeth Margaret FOSTER was born on Apr. 14, 1835 in Bainbridge, Putnam County, Indiana. She was the sixth of ten children born to Henry Foster Jr. and Jane NELSON Foster (who were married Oct. 3, 1823). Elizabeth married Bladen Ashby September 12, 1854 at the Foster home near Bainbridge, Putnam County, Indiana.

Elizabeth and Bladen left Indiana in the spring of 1856, moving to Iowa where relatives lived. They raised a crop there that summer but in August, when Elizabeth's second child was two or three weeks old, they moved again. Elizabeth was carried in the back of a covered wagon and was attended to by other women as several families traveled together to relocate. Elizabeth's sister, Mary FOSTER Ashby, and Mary's husband James "Jim" Ashby who was Bladen's brother were in the group. They traveled from Iowa to Missouri, then on to Kansas arriving in 1857.

Elizabeth & Bladen Ashby had ten children:
Sarah "Hattie", Mariettie "Ettie" Clay, William Frank, Nannie "Kate", Eva Jane, Alva Lincoln, Arthur James, Elizabeth "Sue", Orien Foster, & Gertrude "Octava"

In her later years, Elizabeth lived with her eighth child, who was known to many of Elizabeth's descendants as "Aunt Sue".
