Eva Jane ASHBY Black was the fifth of ten children born to Bladen Ashby and Elizabeth Margaret FOSTER Ashby. Eva Jane was born near Prairie City, Kansas, on March 29, 1863. She grew up in that area which became known as Baldwin City and attended a finishing school. She married Harry James Black on 6 Nov. 1889 in Media, Douglas County, Kansas. The family lived on a farm in Baldwin, Kansas before moving to Colorado where they opened a jewelry store. They moved to Southern California in 1918. Eva and her husband Harry had five children: Dorothy Katherine, Harriet Elizabeth, Paul Ashby, Homer Eugene and Carl Harold.
