Harry James Black was born in Baldwin, Kansas on Feb. 3, 1864 to William M. Black, a Mayflower descendant, and Catherine STUART Black. His siblings were Washington Cyrus, Charles Stuart and Hattie Alice, Harry's twin. Harry married Eva Jane ASHBY on Nov. 6, 1889 in Media, Douglas County, Kansas. They had five children: Dorothy Katherine, Harriet Elizabeth, Paul Ashby, Homer Eugene and Carl Harold.

Harry and Eva lived on a farm in Prairie City, Kansas, before moving with their five children to Colorado around 1905 where they harvested strawberries. Harry became a jeweler and opened a store in Canon City, Colorado. They moved again in 1918 to Southern California. Harry was an elder in the Presbyterian Church.
