Mary, her husband James, and young son Silas Henry traveled with a group to Kansas by covered wagon on a long journey from Indiana in the Fall of 1856 through Missouri and on to Kansas in the Spring of 1857. Among others, the group included Mary's sister Elizabeth FOSTER Ashby and Elizabeth's husband Bladen Ashby who was Jim's brother, along with their two young children. The two families built homes along the same creek in an area that became Baldwin City.
